Job Description

We seek a dynamic, energetic Associate Researcher Scientist to support the planning and implementation of NIH-funded studies that investigate ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) relating to the inclusion of people with disability in precision medicine research.

Working directly with the lead researcher, the Associate Researcher Scientist will support all aspects of these projects, including conducting literature review, quantitative and qualitative data collection, data analyses, and assistance with professional presentations and manuscript preparation.

The ideal candidate should have experience conducting empirical research, familiarity with ELSI research, and background in public health and/or social sciences scholarship. Interest and knowledge in disability studies is a plus. The Associate Researcher Scientist will work with the Ethics team at the Center for Precision Medicine and Genomics (CPMG), Columbia University Medical Center in New York, NY (

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct academic literature reviews relevant to the studies.
  • Support all aspects of data collection and analyses, including data management, data cleaning, analyses of survey responses, and manuscript preparation.
  • Help supervise work of research staff.
  • Communicate and coordinate work with researchers, collaborators, and research staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

As an Associate Research Scientist, this appointment will be covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and Columbia Postdoctoral Workers-UAW Local 4100.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD with experience conducting empirical research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD (including recent graduates) in bioethics, public health, disability studies, social sciences, or other related field and familiarity with ELSI research.
  • At least two years of experience conducting quantitative and qualitative data collection and analyses, including the use of data analysis software.
  • Experience with writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Familiarity with disability studies.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work well independently, complete assignments in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple tasks to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines.
  • Demonstrated interest in social sciences research, ELSI research, and/or disability studies.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication and presentation skills, including effective verbal and written communication.
  • Experience supervising research staff.
  • Comfortable with research technologies and online platforms for research.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and learn new skills (e.g., disability accessibility).
