About The Position We are looking for exemplary firefighters who are passionate about working together to save lives, fight wildland fires, and commit their time and dedication to serving their community. In this role you are initially given direct and detailed supervision and training in learning the principles and techniques of firefighting and equipment and building maintenance activities. After successful completion of training, you will be expected to perform the full range of fire suppression, safety and prevention duties on an in‑service training basis and to learn and perform journey level skills in all areas of work assigned. If you also want to be considered for the Firefighter‑Paramedic or Fire Engineer Paramedic (Lateral) positions with Marin County Fire Department, you must complete separate applications. About You Qualified candidates have experience performing structural and wildland fire suppression, rescue operations and emergency medical procedures. They have earned an associate degree or a four‑year degree at an accredited college or university and have completed college‑level coursework in fire science or a related field. They are highly organized, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, approach their work with enthusiasm, and demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service. Responsibilities • Perform fire suppression, safety and prevention duties.

  • Conduct emergency rescue operations and provide emergency medical services.
  • Maintain and inspect firefighting apparatus, tools and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and the public during emergency operations.
Qualifications Knowledge of fire suppression and rescue principles, practices, techniques, apparatus, and equipment. Basic emergency medical skills. Fire service hydraulics. Principles of fire behavior, physics, chemistry of fire, mechanics of pumps and effects of weather on fire. Building design, construction, and material characteristics; weights, measures, and capacities. Ventilation, forcible entry, ladder and hose practice. Related tools and equipment usage and maintenance. Fire control safety procedures; wildland fire control practices and principles. Effective teamwork techniques. Ability To Analyze emergency conditions and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action. Write comprehensive reports and maintain accurate records. Perform basic mathematical calculations. Read and interpret complex technical documents such as maps, diagrams, and textbooks. Understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Deal effectively with those contacted in the course of work. Work and live harmoniously with co‑workers. To Be Considered Be current on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) within 12 months prior to application date. Have a Cal‑JAC CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) card that is dated within 12 months prior to application date. Have a passing score (70 or higher) on the FCTC Written Test within 12 months prior to application date. Minimum Qualifications High school graduation OR equivalent (GED). Must be at least 18 years of age by the application filing deadline. Certificates and Licenses Firefighter I Certificate issued by the California State Fire Marshal OR must have successfully completed a California State Fire Marshal approved Firefighter I Academy. A valid California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate, which must be maintained throughout employment. A valid Healthcare Provider CPR certificate issued by a training center approved by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority; Healthcare Provider cards issued by the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross meet the CPR requirement. A valid Class C (CA Basic Driver’s License). Online driving record obtained within the last six months from the Department of Motor Vehicles. A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required within 12 months of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
