Job Description

The Research Assistant I provides technical assistance in carrying out various research projects in the research Lab headed by Dr. Nurieva in the department of Immunology.

Tissue Culture and Immunological Assays

1.Maintain and establish tissue culture cell lines, which requires good sterile technique and ability to determine cell counts and cell viability using microscope and hemocytometer.

2.Prepare sterile media and solutions.

3.Monitor, order and shelve tissue culture supplies.

4.Prepare cells for cryogenic storage and subsequent re-establishment of viable cell lines.

5.Pack and mail cell lines to collaborators using dry ice.

6.Some protocols require work on weekends/holidays and time away must be coordinated with other staff to ensure cell lines are maintained.

Mouse Work

1.Successfully complete training and certification by the Department of Veterinary Medicine to handle and work with live animals, primarily mice, in a safe and humane manner, following institutional guidelines for disposal of dead animals, biohazards and used needles

2. Provide assistance ordering laboratory animals as requested by the PI and maintaining up-to-date animal inventory.

3. Other duties include assisting with setting up breedings, transferring cages between rooms, ear tagging and tail snipping, and updating lab, breeding, and genotyping records.

Lab Functions and Other duties

1.Maintain accurate, written detailed records of experimental data and protocols.

2.Actively participate in lab meetings when others are presenting.

3.Demonstrate and practice lab safety precautions. Handle, store, and dispose of chemically hazardous materials and biohazardous materials in procedure specified to meet MDA safety guidelines.

4.Requires techniques for handling chemicals and requires ability to calculate molarity and accurately prepare media solutions and reagents, using a pH meter, balances, electrophoresis apparatus, and the use of acids, polyacrylamide solutions, flammable materials and other biohazards, according to institutional safety policies.

5.Maintain clean and neat work area in laboratory to ensure efficient functioning and pleasant/safe work environment.

6.Assist with ordering laboratory supplies, maintaining inventory and calling vendors when service calls are required.

7.Maintain good working relationship with other lab members. Responds and assists other employees, as required.

8.Communicate any potential problems to supervisor in a timely manner.

9.May involve occasional exposure to hazardous equipment and materials.

10.Other duties as assigned

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree, major course work in one of the basic sciences.

Experience

Required: No experience.

Preferred: Prior mouse model experience or animal handling experience.
