Your Team MAG's Socioeconomic data team compiles and analyzes demographic, housing, and economic data to support regional planning and modeling. The intern will collect, organize, and analyze housing completion and permit data, which are key inputs for MAG's population projection model. The role also includes working with Census and parcel-level data to support broader planning and analysis efforts. The Position MAG is seeking a qualified, team-oriented student in Data Science, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Urban/Regional Planning, or a related field for a paid internship. The position is part of the Data Management and Application team in the Transportation Division. Interns at MAG contribute to work that supports real-world planning decisions across the region. The primary duties include, but are not limited to: Processing and analyzing census, demographic, and housing data Developing, maintaining, and enhancing multiple large and complex socioeconomic and transportation datasets for research and analysis Conducting spatial analyses, including geoprocessing and advanced data transformation Enhancing and developing automated SQL scripts to improve data acquisition and processing Analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing current and historical data through tables, graphs, charts, and cartographic outputs Coordinating with MAG member agencies, stakeholders, and the public to collect and review data and fulfill data/analysis requests Conducting research and analysis independently and with a team The Candidate The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Skilled in: Applying general office practices, administrative procedures, records management, and other organizational techniques Creating reports and presentations Effective written and verbal communication Adaptable in performing a wide range of duties, frequently shifting tasks of varying nature or complexity Ability to: Adapt to rapidly changing, demanding environment Analyze and think critically, draw conclusions, and report results accurately Develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships Exercise sound judgement to make critical decisions Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries Manage multiple projects with competing timelines effectively Organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files accurately Technology Skills Candidate should have working knowledge of ESRI's GIS suite and geoprocessing tools, relational database management systems such as MS SQL, statistics, MS Office Suite, along with a willingness to advance their technological knowledge. Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills are required. Knowledge of development languages such as Python, R, Java, and/or statistical packages/languages is desirable. Experience working with census data or economic impact analysis is a plus. Experience and Education High school diploma (or GED equivalent) At least two (2) years of relevant college coursework in Data Science, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Urban/Regional Planning, or a related field Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities The Maricopa Association of Governments is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
